UK General Election: Will we be voting?

Here at DELAH, we aren’t deaf, blind, or unable to read a room. We’ve seen the statistics and resonate with the facts proving cross-generational disbelief in politicians and the current government.

We see today’s front-runners arguing like children, making false claims about themselves and their opposition in a bid to win, inevitably leading to more broken promises.

Whilst politics isn’t a topic we normally explore, we felt it was important to share our stance today.

The “I’m not really into politics” phrase is one of the biggest lies we tell ourselves and others. Fortunately, it is rapidly going out of fashion as more of us are replacing it with a more valid and explainable “I don’t trust the politicians”.

The problem we face is if we don’t vote, someone else votes for us. If we want change, it's better to have the satisfaction of knowing we made an effort than the regret of having not.

After all, this election decides who governs the country, essentially shaping our livelihoods for the next five years.

Today, Thursday 4th July 2024, we face a general election, and you may wonder, why DELAH speaks now. Is it too little too late?

Registrations are long closed, researching the manifestos takes time to make an informed decision, and you likely already have a busy day ahead to consider another priority.

It’s exactly now that we feel there is a need to speak and to encourage your vote over the finish line.

If for nothing else, exercise your right.

Women haven't always had the right to vote.

This hard-won right came after years of struggle and sacrifice by countless women who fought for our inclusion in the democratic process.

Exercising this right is not only a way to honour their legacy but also to ensure that women's voices continue to be heard in shaping our society.

By voting, we uphold the progress made and continue to advocate for equality and representation.

Even when trust in parliamentary options is low, voting is still essential. It's a way to voice our concerns and push for change.

By casting our ballots, we show that we want better representation. Voting keeps our democracy strong and ensures everyone's voice is heard, not just a select few.

Despite any frustrations, voting empowers us to build a better future.

This is not only a final reminder to head to the polling station before 10 pm tonight, but hopefully enough of a succinct reminder of why we should vote.
